The Master Builders Association (MBA) says north Queensland is driving a resurgence in the state's housing sector.

Bureau of Statistics figures show north Queensland's building approval rates in 2012 increased by 35.5 per cent on the previous year. Paul Bidwell from MBA Queensland says northern regions have fared much better than the state's south east. "What's happening clearly is that the regions that are exposed to the resources sector are doing better than those that aren't," he said. "So Cairns is behind a bit because of its exposure to the tourist sector, same with the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. It's really Mackay, central Queensland, north Queensland and going down to south west Queensland - those areas where there's some impact of the resources centre that are faring very well.
