An man has died a week after he confronted an alleged thief who broke into his home in Sydney's south west.

Police say the 78-year-old man and his wife arrived home last Monday afternoon to find an unknown man inside their Moorebank property.The woman left the room and returned to find her husband on the floor, the stranger had left.Paramedics were called and the man was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.The man died in hospital yesterday.A 53-year-old man has already been charged in relation to the break in.
