New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell has ordered an investigation into whether Finance Minister Greg Pearce rorted ministerial travel guidelines the day allegations surfaced he had been drunk in State Parliament.

Mr Pearce travelled to Canberra to attend drinks hosted by Liberal party powerbroker Michael Photios on Monday, a day after Mr O'Farrell threatened to sack him over the drinking allegations.But Mr Pearce had told media and Mr O'Farrell's office he was unwell on Monday.Mr Pearce's office has insisted all week the trip was private, but it has now emerged his flights and accommodation were booked by the State Government.Mr Pearce's spokeswoman says he also inspected a housing development.Mr O'Farrell is in China, but he has ordered the Director General of the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Chris Eccles, to investigate whether Mr Pearce breached ministerial travel guidelines.
